Seeing your child have difficulty in school can be heartbreaking. Often parents know that something is wrong, but they don’t know what it is.
Understanding how school systems work is essential in assuring that your child is receiving a free, appropriate, public education (FAPE). Utilizing an educational consultant can help parents open positive lines of communication to ensure their child’s unique social, emotional, academic, and behavioral needs are being met within the least restrictive environment.
As an educational consultant I meet with parents to discuss concerns surrounding their child’s education. I review current Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and 504 plans, initiate positive correspondence with school administration, and provide assistance in creating effective plans that will improve their child’s educational experience. I help parents organize their IEP paperwork and prepare for IEP meetings. I assist in interpreting educational evaluations to be sure parents understand their child’s unique strengths and weaknesses and how these strengths and weakness will impact their child’s daily performance in school. I also explain how these assessments are used to make special education determinations as well as develop goals and objectives designed to meet their child’s individual educational needs.

Special Education & 504 Advocate
Successful advocacy requires an in-depth understanding of the child, the school, and the family. As a parent of a child with special needs, I understand the challenges families face on a daily basis. As a practicing special education teacher, I understand the daily challenges teachers face while working to meet the needs of the numerous students within their classroom. This unique perspective of seeing education from both sides of the table allows me to approach difficult situations in a manner that will meet the student’s educational needs within the confines of public education by understanding and utilizing the rights afforded to students through the American Disabilities Act (ADA) and Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
As an educational advocate I accompany parents to their child’s Individual Education Plan (IEP) and 504 meetings. With parents permission I may speak on their behalf during IEP and 504 meetings by asking appropriate questions and clarifying information the parents may be having difficulty understanding. I may assist in determining the child’s educational needs and helping to develop appropriate goals and objectives to meet those needs. I may also assist in determining the best way of collecting essential goal related data used to track the child’s progress. Often, I recommend accommodations that enhance the child’s educational performance and experience, and modifications that may be necessary due to the child’s disability.
I bring years of experience to the table. I understand that 504s are designed to level the playing field through appropriate medical and academic accommodations designed to assure the child can access the curriculum within the general education classroom. As a special education teacher I understand the obstacles that can impede the child’s ability to access the curriculum, and I know the accommodations and modifications needed to assist the child within both the general education classroom as well as within the resource room environment. I always approach every situation in a manner that respects the child’s dignity, encourages self-accomplishment, increases self-confidence, and enhances the child’s self- esteem.

Reading & Writing Tutor
I am an educator who is firmly committed to the truth that ALL children can learn if given appropriate instruction. Whether that is through proper classroom management, appropriate accommodations, or correctly implemented, explicitly taught, systematic instruction, it is essential that the methods and programs being implemented are not only data driven and research based, but, more importantly, that they are being implemented with fidelity and validity.
I have been teaching reading and writing in the Special Education Resource Room environment for the last 10 years. During this time, I have utilized a variety of different reading programs with great success. These programs include: Orton-Gillingham, Wilson, LIPs, Spire, Recipe for Reading, Explode the Code, and Dolch. The writing programs I have utilized include: Six-Traits, Write Source, Winston Multi-Sensory, and Ardith Cole Constructed Response. The program I use depends entirely on the individual needs of each student as determined by a variety of evaluations.
